Die Alpha-ID ermöglicht es, medizinische und alltagssprachliche Diagnosenbezeichnungen zu kodieren, stellt also Diagnosenkodes zur Verfügung. 2005 als Prototyp vom DIMDI herausgegeben basiert die Alpha-ID auf dem Alphabetischen Verzeichnis zur ICD-10-GM. Jedem Eintrag des Alphabets ist eine fortlaufende, stabile, nichtsprechende Identifikationsnummer zugeordnet: der Alpha-ID-Kode. Er identifiziert den Eintrag eindeutig und übernimmt somit die Funktion eines nichtklassifizierenden Diagnosenkodes.
