Indicates whether an interpreter is required to facilitate communication in a healthcare setting. While this extension is named patient-interpreterRequired for backwards compatibility, it may also be used on RelatedPerson, Practitioner, and Encounter.

Context of Use

This extension may be used on the following element(s)

When used on Patient, RelatedPerson, or Practitioner, it indicates a default or assumed need for an interpreter.

When used on Encounter, it indicates that at interpreter is needed to facilitate communication between some participants in that Encounter. The encounter-level evaluation of whether an interpreter is needed may involve evaluating the language proficiencies of the participants.
