Introduction

The National Health Care Surveys, with its NHCS Clinical Document Architecture (CDA) Release 3, more closely aligned its data requirements with USCDI V3. The alignment with USCDI is increased in this FHIR IG. The Health Care Survey Content Bundle is limited to data elements included in USCDI V1 as operationalized by 17 US Core Resource Profiles v6.1. As medications administered during encounters have been collected in the National Health Care Surveys for decades, it was felt this data was needed so as to not have gaps in collection years. Thus, the only exception to the US Core Profiles only heuristic is the HCS MedicationAdministration Profile, which is also included in the Health Care Survey Content Bundle. The National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) plans to align the data elements in future releases of this IG with those that achieve recognition for voluntary implementation in the Standards Version Advancement Process (SVAP) or are required by regulation as part of USCDI.

The Health Care Surveys Content Implementation Guide (IG) specifies how to enable health care organizations to implement Health Care Surveys Use Cases outlined in the IG.

Technical Overview

The main sections of this IG are:

  • Use Cases - The use cases provide business context for the IG and information that implementers should familiarize themselves with prior to reading the remainder of the IG.
  • Detailed Specification - The formal specification identifying the requirements for the implementers.
  • Downloads - Allows downloading a copy of this implementation guide and other useful information.
